WHAT IS BIOCHAR

"Biochar is a 2,000 year old practice that converts agricultural waste into a soil enhancer that can hold carbon, boost food security and discourage deforestation. The process creates a fine-grained, highly porous charcoal that helps soils retain nutrients and water. Biochar is produced through pyrolysis or gasification processes that heat biomass in the absence (or under reduction) of air. In addition to creating a soil enhancer, sustainable biochar practices can produce oil and gas byproducts that can be used as fuel, providing clean, renewable energy. When the biochar is buried in the ground as a soil enhancer, the system can become "carbon negative." International Biochar Initiative

Debate surrounding Australia's Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme has placed biochar high on the political agenda with both major Australian parties outlining plans to improve the focus on carbon emission reduction through soil management techniques, such as biochar. All current signs suggest that biochar is one of humanities greatest weapons in the fight against climate change.

This conference will explore Australia's own success stories within the biochar realm exhibiting business models, organisational case studies and world first research.

This conference will allow you see biochar created first-hand, pose questions to world leading experts, and develop your own biochar strategy.

IIR's landmark Biochar Conference will explore the following issues:

  • Advances in biochar technology abroad
  • Australian regional outlooks and updates
  • Carbon sequestration
  • The road to policy development
  • Sustainable biochar production
  • Getting biochar on your organisation environmental agenda
  • Creating a biochar business plan

"Biochar can be used to address some of the most urgent environmental problems of our time-soil degradation, food insecurity, water pollution from agrichemicals, and climate change."
Dr. Johannes Lehmann, Cornell University, Chairman of the International Biochar Initiative Board of Directors
